September 2008: Search Engine Marketing

I have received a lot of emails on the subject of SEO. So much so that I will be devoting the bulk of September to answer them all.

One of the biggest questions I get deals with turning all the book knowledge into something useable. A lot of sites say you must experiment, but they don't say how you go about doing that. They so you will need to fool with the title tags or the keywords found in the written copy of the page, but they don't say when you should replace it, how much you should replace, what is good and what is simply keyword stuffing.

I will use examples to show what the meanings are behind these things. Also I will do some reviews of some good software and a few sites that provide the tools I use to get better SEO marks.

Why am I qualified to do this?
Good question. Well for starters WebHostMagazine.com has more than 100 #1 key terms on Google and Yahoo and several hundred key terms on the first page. The SEO work on WebHostMagazine.com has taken a lot of trial and error and fine tuning and I have even gone off the page as far as identifying things that can be done to increase key terms. On the marketing side of search engines, I have been consulting companies for eight years on how to run proper marketing campaigns that include PPC campaigns, offline marketing, viral campaigns, and social networks.

Yeah… but are you an expert?
I would like to think so, however I know many who are far better at this than I am. I may be an expert, but I am not the expert, far from it. I am good at what I do, but certainly not the best. It is my hope that the techniques I will teach you here during this month will give you a reason to explore the topic more thoroughly or even start the creative juices flowing. At the least, you will be armed with knowledge that will allow you to find the right consultant for you and to ask the proper questions.

When will the SEM stuff start?
The SEM articles will start the 1st of September and will continue till it’s end. We will begin looking over a site from the ground up. How to analyze the keyword usage on your current site and where to take it from there. Then we will look at the rules that should be considered when optimizing your site. When to trade off those huge pay off words for high placement on a dozen or so low high conversion keywords.

And we will conclude with how to maintain the site once it has “made it.”

    Know the Lingo

To help you sort through the numerous SEM terminology out their, we have compiled a small list of definitions to act as a glossary. These lists are by no means extensive, but are enough to get your feet wet:

    Terminology Part 1
    Terminology Part 2
